Terrazzo is very porous and depending on what type of material
was placed over it such as carpet, tile or vinyl, stains could be
permanent. If you have had carpet over the terrazzo and attempt to
remove the carpet tack strips, DO NOT use a hammer or pry bar to
pull the nails out. You will end up pulling out large chunks of
terrazzo with the nail causing a much larger expense for you.
Carefully remove the wood strip around the nails and use a hand
grinder with a metal grinding disc to remove the nail head and
grind the nail flush with the terrazzo floor. Or simply leave the tack
strip removal to us. If there are stains in the terrazzo, you may
attempt to remove them by applying a peroxide 30 or 40%
solution on the stained areas and cover it with plastic or seran
wrap. Leave the solution on the stain overnight. Apply it fairly thick
on the stain and about 1 inch past the stain. This may pull the stain
out of the floor. You may need to do a second application. You can
purchase this product at a beauty supply store. It could be very
costly to you to have this process done by a contractor due to the
time involved.
If you had tile over the terrazzo and you or a contractor use a
power hammer to remove the tile, make sure you use the tool at no
more than a 25 degree angle with the floor so you do not make
several hundred chips in your terrazzo floor.
